OpenAI has also been very aggressive about enforcing its trademark rights against others. In the last few months alone, OpenAI has opposed trademark applications for CLOUDYGPT, MATSGPT, BLUGPT, CAT GPT, CHATGPTBBQ, GENEGPT, TELECONSULTANTGPT, GPTPRO.BIZ, UROGPT, LIFEGPT, SENSIBLEGPT, TRANSGPT, PETGPT, ROBOTEON WAREHOUSEGPT, RYTE GPT, CRIMEGPT, CIVICGPT, EYEGPT, OPHGPT, OPHTHGPT, and DATEGPT. Presumably, they are trying to build a strong defensive moat around the term “GPT”. Their efforts seem to be working, as many applicants aren’t willing to fight back. It’s a reminder that, even in the rapidly evolving world of AI, there’s still a role to play for old school trademark enforcement tactics.
