Trump Making Waves With Proposed Gulf Rebrand

New President. New trademark applications. They go hand in hand.

Donald Trump made headlines on Monday when he said he was serious about renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. Hillary Clinton’s response also made headlines:

Setting aside the issue as to whether this is even possible, I would expect to see a bunch of GULF OF AMERICA trademark applications filed in the coming days. What I did not expect is that there already is a trademark registration for GULF OF AMERICA for hats and t-shirts:

Here’s a photo of the trademark on a t-shirt:

Hats off to the applicant for doing some real crystal ball voodoo magic fortune telling. The application was filed all the way back in 2016 while Obama was still President.

The good news for the trademark owner is that he is sitting on a potentially lucrative trademark registration. The bad news is that he might have to spend a fortune on enforcement work. In the United States, trademark owners are responsible for enforcing their trademark rights. Better get those cease and desist letters ready!
